Assembling Your TM-BUpdated 3 hours ago

Your TM-B ships partially assembled. This article walks through the full process!

📹Videos can be found here.

*If you’d rather have a professional handle it, or just want a second set of eyes afterward, we recommend a professional safety inspection and bolt check from an ALSO Authorized Service Partner. Find one near you on the ALSO Service Partner map.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Thinking about a future move, storage, or a warranty return? Consider holding onto the outer box and foam inserts for a while — trust us, it’s easier.

  • WARNING: Improper assembly can result in serious injury. If you’re unsure about any assembly step, take the e-bike to a professional bicycle mechanic.

  • WARNING: The unopened TM-B box weighs over 110 lbs (49.9 kg). Use caution when lifting or moving it — get equipment or a friend to help if needed.

  • If possible, assemble your TM-B somewhere with electricity and cellular connectivity — these steps also cover charging and pairing along the way, which gets you riding sooner. No connectivity or power nearby? Finish the physical assembly first, then move the bike to a better spot to finish charging and updates.

1. Open the box and lay out parts

  1. Release the clips around the top and bottom of the box, lift the top lid off, then lift out the smaller boxes (small parts, cockpit, top frame, and the top tray underneath) and set them aside.

  2. Grab the outer box sleeve by its handholds and lift it off completely.

  3. Cut the zip ties at the front to detach the brake levers from the front cardboard — watch that the brake levers don’t scratch the fork as they fall.

  4. Then remove the front cardboard and set the front wheel and its tray aside.

2. Power on your e-bike

  1. See Charging Your Battery to Full Before Your First Ride

  2. Locate the reset button below the speaker on the downtube and press and release it to power on the e-bike.

  3. On the Portal, swipe within 60 seconds to confirm you’re “waking” the e-bike.

    • If you miss the time window, press the reset button again and swipe.

  4. If the Portal shows a low battery warning, get the USB-C charger from the small parts box and plug it into the port on the frame (push up on the round cover to reveal it).

    • No power nearby? Remove the battery (lift its center handle from the bottom, rotate counter-clockwise, then pull it straight out) and charge it separately.

    • WARNING: The battery is over 10 lbs (4 kg). Be careful when inserting and removing it.

3. Install the cockpit (handlebars and controls)

  1. Use the torque wrench and 4 mm Allen bit to remove the two bolts and washers from the stem faceplate.

  2. Align the cockpit’s power connector with the connector in the stem and seat it firmly, then close the faceplate.

    • Alternate torquing the two bolts three times to ensure a full hold (L-R, L-R, L-R), torquing to 12 Nm. Do not overtorque.

  3. Identify the left and right brake levers — when installed, they should point outward with the mounting bolt below the handlebar.

  4. Use the wrench and 4 mm Allen bit to remove the left brake lever bolt, install the brake clamp around the handlebar, then reinstall the bolt and partially tighten it.

  5. Repeat with the right brake lever.

  6. Carefully check that the turn signal paddles don’t interfere with full brake lever movement, then torque the brake lever bolts to 6 Nm.

    • IMPORTANT: Don’t squeeze the front (left) brake lever until assembly is done — it closes the brake calipers and makes front wheel installation much harder.

    • WARNING: Always make sure the brake levers can be fully depressed. Interference with a brake lever risks loss of control and/or injury.

  7. Lift the front of the e-bike and make sure the kickstand is fully down and forward before setting it down — the e-bike can fall over if the kickstand isn’t fully engaged.

4. Install the front wheel

  1. Remove the plastic brace from the front axle and the plastic brake pad spacer from the caliper. Roll the front wheel into the fork until the brake rotor slides most of the way into the caliper.

    • WARNING: Do not touch the brake rotors, as grease or dirt can affect bike performance. Rotors are also slightly sharp.

  2. Position yourself in front of the e-bike, insert the thru axle through the right fork, through the wheel, and thread it into the left fork.

    • IMPORTANT: Don’t press on the handlebars in this step — it compresses the fork and makes alignment harder.

    • Keep the wheel upright, not tipping left or right.

    • Don’t press the rotor fully against the back of the caliper — once seated, pull the wheel slightly toward you to help with axle insertion.

  3. Torque the thru axle to 12 Nm.

  4. Alternate torquing the two axle locks three times to ensure a full hold (L-R, L-R, L-R), torquing both locks to 12 Nm.

  5. Finish inflating both tires to the pressure listed on the tire sidewall using the Schrader valve pump. (A bicycle tire pump also works, and might be faster than the included shock pump.)

5. Install the pedals

  1. Pedals are marked - R and - L for right and left (relative to a seated rider) — the right pedal can only be installed on the right side, and vice versa.

  2. Thread the right pedal onto the crank by rotating the pedal clockwise, and the left pedal by rotating it counter-clockwise.

  3. Start tightening each nut by hand, then once fully seated, torque to 20 Nm with the wrench and 6 mm Allen bit.

6. Install the top frame

  1. If you have a Utility top frame, insert the seat into the seat tube (careful not to wipe off the grease inside)

    • If you plan to use bags — get the bag clamps or soft bag rails from the utility top frame box and fasten them onto the rails.

    • Position them as far forward as possible without hitting your heels while pedaling, hand-tight only.

    • WARNING: You must install the soft bag rails before attaching soft bags. Soft items on the utility rack can sag toward the rear wheel and get caught in the suspension as it moves through its travel.

  2. Install any top frame by placing the front of its base into the lock first (like putting on a shoe), then lowering the back in and holding it for a moment — the TM-B detects and locks it automatically.

7. Install the reflectors

  1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to mount the two long white reflectors over a wheel spoke on each wheel

    • the circular white reflector to the front handlebar (centered, away from controls)

    • and the circular red reflector to the seat post (or the bench top frame’s L-bracket, at the bottom rear edge of the seat).

8. Pair your TM-B to your account

Pairing links your phone, your account, and your TM-B together — do this during assembly so you're ready to ride as soon as you're done.

*Your ALSO mobile app pairs one phone to one TM-B (associating one account, one e-bike, and one phone together).

  1. Press the brake levers to wake the e-bike and check the Portal display.

  2. (If you have connectivity) Scan the QR code to download the ALSO mobile app.

  3. Follow the app to pair your TM-B, name it, and set a PIN.

9. Check for updates

Check the Portal display to see if an OTA (over-the-air) update is ready to install.

We recommend installing the latest firmware before your first ride, to make sure the bike is fully up to date.

Congratulations — your TM-B is assembled!
